The Garden Maintenance Volunteers are a group of keen but not expert gardeners. We welcome new volunteers to help plan, plant and maintain our two plots at the Heath Community Centre and our award winning walled garden at Wilfred House. You don’t have to be an expert, just enjoy getting your hands dirty! If you love growing vegetables we would welcome your expertise. If you love growing flowers, like we do, come and join us.

The garden gang has had a very busy summer. The lovely hot dry summer made gardening more challenging than usual. Daily filling of watering cans became essential. Watering will certainly be easier next year as we now have a water butt installed at Wilfred House courtyard. Many thanks to Rob and Denise for making it happen.

At the Uttoxeter Garden in Bloom presentation evening held at the Town Hall, we were thrilled to find out that following visits from RHS judges in June and July, we had been awarded ‘Level 5 outstanding’ for the Wilfred House u3a walled garden.

I would like to thank all volunteers for their hard work in planning, planting and maintaining the garden. You are all outstanding!! Wendy Flower

May and June have been busy months for the garden volunteers. The vegetable plot at The Heath has gone from strength to strength - chard, beetroot, sweetcorn, broccoli, potatoes, leeks, French and runner beans, courgettes - you name it we are growing it! Perennials, sweet peas, sun flowers, herbs and seeds are providing a lovely display at The Heath. So much weeding and watering done by the gang to keep it ship shape.

Planting and maintaining the courtyard garden at Wilfred House, with it’s red, white and blue display for VE and VJ day, has involved lots of fun and hard work. It even included volunteers dancing to Sweet Caroline - vocals and music provided by the Community Choir!! The majority of the plants have been grown from seeds or cared for over the winter.

No green fingers required.
