After Dark

Members and guests of Uttoxeter & District u3a enjoyed a highly successful “After Dark” evening on Saturday 21st February at Wilfred House, which had been impressively transformed for the occasion. The hall was attractively dressed with blue and red tablecloths, coloured table lighting and disco effects; walls decorated with musical notes and vinyl 45 singles specially created by the Events Team. The overall presentation created a vibrant welcoming atmosphere befitting the theme.

The evening’s entertainment was provided by the exceptionally talented Paul Tabor, who performed from 7.30-10.30pm, with a short interval to repair a guitar string and rest his voice. His extensive repertoire was entirely audience-led, with requests submitted all evening. So many were received that the front of the stage became covered in a cascade of confetti request slips. Given the volume of favourites requested, a return visit will be required to accommodate them all.
There was enthusiastic participation throughout, with members and guests singing along and keeping the dance floor busy for most of the evening. As the second set drew to a close, calls for “more” resulted in an energetic rendition of “500 Miles”, followed by a final requested encore of “Nothing Compares 2 U”.
The Chair, Rob Hawkins, formally thanked Paul for an engaging and memorable performance. Appreciation was also extended to the Events Team, and all who contributed to the planning, delivery and support of the event.
The evening concluded with a collective effort to clear and tidy the hall, enabling everyone to depart and be home well before midnight — a testament to the teamwork of both members and guests.
Our thanks go to everyone who supported the event, and in particular to Paul Tabor for delivering such an enjoyable and memorable evening. Sue Walsh

What a fantastic evening this turned out to be!
The hall at Wilfred House well and truly transformed with smart blue table coverings, coloured table lights, wall decor and nibbles on the tables.

The Band 3/6d comprising lead singer, lead and bass guitarists, and drummer began their first set at 7.30pm. Two songs in, our dancers were up on their feet, and that's where most of them stayed, on the dance floor, all night long…. We enjoyed a mix of 60's to 90's music… 8 days a week, The Summer of 69, The Sultans of Swing, Proud Mary, Does Your Mamma Know, Hotel California, Johnny B. Goode, Red Light, and a very debatable Northern Soul dance number "The Snake" (performed on request).

It was easy to forget where we were, with the enhanced stage lighting and speaker system that 3/6d bought with them. We were taken back to a time, when we most definitely weren't the oldest swingers in town! After a short break at 8.45pm, 3/6d began their second set until 10.00pm, when the audience cried out for more, the band obliging and playing on to 10.20pm.

A fantastic effort by everyone, meant the hall was quickly tidied, tables and chairs stacked away, and Uttoxeter u3a members, friends and guests made their way home.
