Physics

Status:Active, open to new members
Coordinator:
When: Weekly on Friday mornings 10:00 am-11:30 am
Venue: Wilfred House
Cost: £2 per session

The physics group will be taking a break during the school Easter holidays but meetings will resume on 17th April, when we will be continuing with our ongoing study of optics.

This topic will continue into May but there will be something completely different on 24th April when Bob Mckenzie will give us a talk on “Ionising Radiation”. The focus will be on why so much radiation is created when a nuclear power station is operated using uranium fuel. He will touch on the origins of radiation from the Big Bang onwards. He will call on his experiences from working 40 years in a nuclear fuel manufacturing plant, and will focus particularly on the steps taken to prevent fuel from going active while it is being made

Did you miss out on the chance of studying physics at school? Or did you go to physics classes without really getting to grips with it at all? Why not give it another try with our Friday morning u3a Physics group? You don’t need to have any previous scientific knowledge in order to enjoy these sessions.

We meet at 10am on Friday mornings during school term time. Sessions last for 1½ hours with a short half-time break, and are designed to be accessible whatever your level of scientific knowledge. If you didn’t study physics at school don’t let that put you off!

We have a varied programme - non-members of the Physics Group are very welcome, but please notify Jenny Lingham beforehand, thanks.

Ideas for future topics are always welcomed, so if you would like to join our group to learn more about a particular physics topic, please get in touch.

If you would be interested in joining our group, please let me know, and feel free to contact me if you would like more information by clicking on the link above. Why not come along and see what you think?
