As we continue to explore new musical genres, both groups have recently played arrangements of ragtime pieces by Scott Joplin and learned something about the US slave plantation origins of ragtime music and the cakewalk dance associated with it. The history of the cakewalk is fascinating and well worth a bit of searching on the internet!

We always welcome new members who can already read classical music notation and have some previous recorder-playing experience (even if this was only in your schooldays!), but we can also point complete beginners to resources which will enable you to acquire these skills with a view to joining the group later

Rather than focusing so exclusively on each person playing a separate part, the Friday Group has also sometimes been doubling up on parts recently in order to play a more challenging range of trios and quartets.

Meanwhile the more experienced players have been practising playing treble instruments "up an octave" (an essential skill for tackling some Baroque music) - and discovering that it is not as hard to do as it sounds!

We always welcome new members who can already read classical music notation and have some previous recorder-playing experience (even if this was only in your schooldays!), but we can also point complete beginners to resources which will enable you to acquire these skills with a view to joining the group later.
